First National City Bank

First National City Bank

Financial District, Downtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The First National City Bank is an outstandingly handsome bank building, executed in granite and designed in a truly monumental scale. Occupying an entire city block, this imposing building impresses many observers even more than its higher neighbors.

Despite its unified appearance, this remarkable building represents two stages or periods in its construction. The great monolithic Ionic columns of the lower colonnade belong to the Greek Revival period of architecture of the 1830s' while the very attractive upper colonnade represents an addition of the early part of the Twentieth Century. The upper colonnade is traditionally correct as it superimposes Corinthian columns above Ionic, in accordance with Classic precedent.

The placing of one colonnade upon another is a familiar theme derived from Classical Greek and Roman architecture, as seen in the Coliseum in Rome with three tiers and in various Forums, or market places, with two tiers.

Here the attic story also forms a conspicuous part of the architectural design, and therefore the building recreates a Renaissance theme of such architects as Andrea Palladio. His Sixteenth Century Palazzo Bonin Thiene at Vicenza is a fine prototype for the bank.

The lower portion of the bank was built for the Merchants Exchange as a fireproof building replacing the old Exchange building burned in the Great Fire of 1835. The new Merchants Exchange was designed by Isaiah Rogers, architect of several fine Greek Revival hotels both here and in other cities.

In 1862 this building became the United States Custom House. "When the Custom House finally moved to the Battery, the National City Bank saved this building by acquiring it. The upper portion of the building represents the skillful addition made for the National City Bank in 1907 by McKim, Mead & White, the outstanding firm of architects of that day.

As one of the few truly monumental Classical buildings of this City, the First National City Bank is important as an example of great commercial power, visibly expressed in stone and mortar. It is also a remarkably successful example of how a former generation preserved one of our most notable buildings. This was accomplished by doubling its size while successfully maintaining good proportions and adhering to the formal traditions of Classical architecture.

Testimony in Favor of Designation

At the public hearing, the representative of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects said, "The lower portion of this monumental structure represents the epitome of Greek Revival in our City for a building of such large size. With its Ionic colonnade above a strong base, and crowned with a Corinthian colonnade and attic type windows by which the design is not compromised but rather enhanced, this building has great strength and dignity..., This entire building, inside and out, is a fine Landmark. It should be retained by all means.

- From the 1965 NYCLPC Landmark Designation Report

Aranybika Hotel's historical building in Debrecen. Half of the original building was destroyed in the 2nd World War and a socialist cube-style building part was attached to the rest of the hotel. This shows well the ambiguity of how Debrecen and how Hungary and how the entire CEE region looks like.

Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary after Budapest. Debrecen is the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region and the capital of Hajdu-Bihar county.

The Protestant Great Church is probably the most well-known building in the city of Debrecen. It stands in the downtown, between Kossuth square and Calvin square. It is the symbol of the Protestant Church in Hungary, and it is because of this church that Debrecen is sometimes referred to as "the Calvinist Rome". With a ground space of 1500 m? it is the largest Protestant church in Hungary. It also has the largest bell of all Hungarian Protestant churches. The Great Church was built between 1805 and 1824 in neoclassical style.

West Baden Springs Hotel

West Baden Springs Hotel

Built in 1902, the hotel was a health spa and resort that capitalized on several mineral springs located on the property. The hotel operated from 1902 until 1932, never recovering from the Wall Street Crash of 1929. It became a Jesuit seminary in 1934 and in 1966 became a branch campus of Northwood Institute. Vacant after 1983, the "Eighth Wonder of the World" slipped into extreme decay, resulting in the collapse of a good portion of the west wall in 1991. In 1992, the National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the hotel as one of America's most endangered places.

Bill Cook, a Bloomington, Indiana, entrepreneur and billionaire, financed a partial restoration of the property by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana which assumed ownership in 1996. It was marketed nationally for almost ten years without a buyer and over 400,000 visitors toured the hotel. In 2006, title was transferred to a subsidiary of Bill Cook's Cook Group to become a part of the French Lick Resort Casino development. In May 2007, the building began hosting guests as a hotel in 246 luxury rooms for the first time since 1932.

The springs were first found in the late 1700s by a former soldier of the American Revolution who had made a name for himself. In 1852, John Lane built a hotel on the site called the Mile Lick Inn and later changed the name to West Baden Inn. In 1887, the Monon railroad built an extension to take guests to the springs and the hotel. Lee Wiley Sinclair from Salem, Indiana bought the hotel in 1888 and added an opera house, a casino and a two-deck, covered, one-third-mile oval bicycle and pony track. A lighted baseball diamond in the center of the track became the spring training grounds for several major league teams including the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. When that hotel burned in 1901, owner Lee Sinclair declared that the new hotel would be fireproof and would have the world's largest dome. West Virginia architect Harrison Albright completed the new West Baden Springs Hotel on time.

Prior to the completion of the Houston Astrodome in 1965, the building had the largest free-spanning dome in the United States and was the largest in the world from 1902-1913. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, became a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and is a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Gedney Farms Hotel

Gedney Farms Hotel

Gedney Farm Golf Club's history dates back to the pre-Revolutionary War era when John and Bartholomew Gedney purchased a large tract of land in White Plains. A luxury resort hotel, Gedney Farm Hotel, was built in 1912. Guests included Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. It had an 18-hole golf course, tennis facilities, swimming pool, bowling, squash courts, stables, a polo field, ice skating rink, and a kennel for pets of guests. Howard Willets, who owned racehorses, stabled them in a barn that is now the men's locker room. On September 20, 1924 a fire destroyed the Hotel.
